In Indonesia, the first news of a death usually arrives on WhatsApp: a family group lights up with Innalillahi, an office group gets a note from HR, and within the hour relatives in three time zones know the name, the time and where to go. That first message is forwarded and read aloud, so its mistakes travel as fast as its facts.

This post is for anyone writing a pemberitahuan kematian lewat WhatsApp who searches in Bahasa Indonesia but reads in English: Indonesian families, diaspora relatives, foreign spouses and colleagues. Every template is in Bahasa Indonesia first, with a note on what it says. For the general version, see how to inform someone of a death on WhatsApp.

Struktur pesan kabar duka (The structure of an Indonesian kabar duka message)

A kabar duka (news of grief) follows a shape readers recognise at a glance.

  1. Opening. Muslim families begin with Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, after the salam. Neutral openings are Kabar duka or Telah meninggal dunia dengan tenang. Christian families often say mendiang and announce an ibadah penghiburan (service of comfort).
  2. Name and relationship. The full name, with bin or binti where used, and who they were to the group: ayahanda dari (father of), ibunda dari (mother of), or a job title.
  3. Day, date and time, with the zone. Write pukul 06.30 WIB, WITA or WIT, not just 06.30.
  4. Place. Rumah sakit (hospital) or kediaman (home).
  5. Rumah duka. The address where people come to melayat.
  6. Pemakaman or kremasi. Time and place, or a note that it is not yet fixed.
  7. Request for prayer. Mohon doa, with the prayer the family asks for.
  8. Closing. Muslim families customarily ask forgiveness on the deceased's behalf, mohon dimaafkan segala kesalahannya, then the closing salam. Otherwise terima kasih.

Glossary: almarhum is a deceased man and almarhumah a deceased woman (Muslim usage); mendiang is the neutral or Christian equivalent; berpulang is passed away, literally returned; rumah duka is the house of mourning; melayat or takziah is a condolence visit; pemakaman is the burial.

Siapa yang dikabari dulu (Who to tell first, and how)

The order matters more than the wording. The spouse, children, parents and siblings should hear by phone, or face to face, before anything goes to a group. Nobody should learn that their mother has died from a screenshot.

Then one person owns the family group announcement, often an eldest child or a sibling not arranging the funeral, so the group gets one version of the time, the name and the address. If the time is not fixed, do not guess: write waktu pemakaman menyusul (burial time to follow) and send template 5 once it is settled. For large mixed groups, see announcing a death in a WhatsApp group.

Kesalahan yang sering terjadi (Common mistakes)

  • Sending to the big group before the spouse and children know. The most painful mistake. Call first.
  • Forwarding instead of writing. A forwarded message carries the Forwarded label and someone else's details, which is how a wrong name reaches two hundred people. Copy, check every line, send fresh.
  • Mixing time zones. A family across Jakarta, Bali and Papua spans three zones. Write WIB, WITA or WIT every time.
  • Photos of the deceased. Many find a photo of the body in a group deeply upsetting, and it cannot be taken back. If a photo is wanted, use one of the person alive, with the close family's agreement.

Cara membalas (How to reply)

Reply briefly, in the group or privately:

  • Muslim: Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. Turut berduka cita yang sedalam-dalamnya atas berpulangnya [Nama]. Semoga almarhum/almarhumah husnul khatimah dan keluarga yang ditinggalkan diberi kesabaran dan ketabahan. (Deepest condolences on the passing of [Name]. May the deceased have a good end, and the family be given patience and strength.)
  • Neutral: Turut berduka cita yang sedalam-dalamnya. Semoga keluarga diberi kekuatan dan ketabahan. (Deepest condolences. May the family be given strength.)

Kapan pesan WhatsApp saja tidak cukup (When a WhatsApp announcement is not enough)

A WhatsApp message reaches almost everyone, and almost is the problem. Elderly relatives in the kampung may not have a smartphone, or may have one a grandchild checks once a day; they need a phone call, or a neighbour sent round. So does anyone especially close to the deceased: a group message is for the crowd.

Employers, banks, insurers and schools need something more formal: a letter or email stating the full name, date of death and family contact, so it can be filed. Our guide on how to inform someone of a death by email has those templates.

The kabar duka is only the first message; the paperwork falls on whoever is left. What makes it easier is a message the person wrote themselves, for the family to receive after they are gone, even if only who to call and where the documents are. We have written about ways to send messages after death; the kindest kabar duka arrives with the deceased's own words attached.
